1. What is ComiXpress?

ComiXpress is a short run, print-on-demand service for indie, self-publishing and small-press comic creators, readers and retailers who support the small press community. It allows creators the opportunity to print their comics in quantities as low as one single issue for incredibly low prices, while enjoying the highest possible quality available today. Comics can also be listed in the ComiXpress online store, with each copy printed and shipped directly to the Reader when they place an order. Retailers can benefit from our system by ordering these comics at a wholesale discount as set by the creator, and support the small press comic scene by making great indie books available to their customers.

2. I’m an indie comic Reader. Can I buy comics from ComiXpress?

3. I’m a Comic Shop Owner. How do I use your service to order comics for my store?

Comic Shop Retailers simply have to create a Retail Account here on the site, and mail or fax us a copy of their Certificate of Resale. Once we have verified that you are a Retail seller, we’ll activate your account and you can start browsing all of the great Indie titles available in our store, as well as accessing unique aspects of the site for Retailers only through your own Retailer panel.

4. I’m a Creator. How do I print my comic with ComiXpress?

You can get a price quote based on the specs of your book at any time with our Comic Printing Cost Calculator. Once you’ve finished creating the files for your comic, simply make a Creator Account and you’re ready to place your order! When we receive your files (either online through our dedicated FTP server, a link to your files on your own site or through the mail) your order will be listed in your Creator Control Panel. From there you can see your job’s status and the shipping date of your order at any time.

5. Do you do proofs?

Yes, a digital PDF proof will be provided at no cost to review layout, pagination, final check for typos, etc. We no longer send physical proofs, but you are always welcome to start with just 1 copy of your, which is the beauty of print-on-demand! Single copy ‘proof’ prints of this nature ship within 2 weeks of receipt of print-ready files and payment.

Please note that PDF proofs cannot be used to check colors due to the variances between on-screen artwork and the printed page. If you have concerns over color or grayscale reproduction we strongly recommend you get 1 book to start. We color calibrate daily and that will allow you to see how your files print on our equipment and papers.

6. Are there Setup Fees for my job?

Not anymore! Files submitted to ComiXpress which meet our Specifications are no longer charged any Setup or PrePress fees. In these tough economic times we realized this would help more up-and-coming artists get their work out there, and that really is why we’re here.

7. What if my files aren’t set up to your specs?

If your comic files are not print ready and require PrePress work by our staff, you will be notified within seven days of our receiving the files. We will explain in detail what needs to be corrected with your files, and we will offer what advice we can to help you do that!

8. What if I need help preparing my files for print? Do you offer PrePress services?

ComiXpress was founded by a comic book artist with a professional background in PrePress and Digital File Preparation, and our dedicated team of PrePress Professionals has a combined experience in the field of over 40 years. We take the setup of your files very seriously, and we’re very, very good at it. If your files require our PrePress services, you will receive an estimate of how long we expect the work to take and what the cost will be. PrePress rates are $60 per hour, billable in 15 minute increments.

9. What if I have changes to a comic I have already printed?

We’re happy to replace pages as you need to make corrections, with only a small fee for the PrePress work, creating a new PDF proof for your review, and archiving the revised comic for future reorders. The rate is $1 per page replaced, with a minimum of $5. This caps at $20 for 20 pages of revisions and above (ie: if you needed to replace 50 pages in a 300 page Trade Paperback, the fee still stops at $20).

10. Will my comic get listed in the ComiXpress online store?

Printing is just one part of the service at ComiXpress; our goal is to integrate affordable short-run, low-cost printing AND distribution for the small press, indie, and self publishers. Books printed at ComiXpress can be made available for sale to both the public and retail comic book stores at no out-of-pocket cost to the creator. We become your virtual warehouse, online store, and fulfillment agency! There is no charge for listing your comic, and you are welcome to activate or deactivate your listing as you choose through your Creator Control Panel. You can list your book as only for sale to Readers through our store, or only to Retailers through our direct Distribution Service, or both. If you would prefer not to have your comics listed in our online store at all that’s fine too! We’ll be happy simply to print your books for you.

11. How do I get paid for my comics sold through the ComiXpress online store?

When you list a book for sale through our online store, your Creator Control Panel shows you the cost to print per book including any discounts you may have on your account.

You then set the price you would like to make it available for, and you earn the difference between the print and sales cost for each sale. You can set different prices for Readers and Retailers to be able to offer stores the discounts they need to carry your book. Your total sales are tracked through your Creator Control Panel, and you can request a payment at any time based upon your earnings sent either via PayPal or have it mailed to you by Check.

12. Are there any restrictions on the content of comics you’ll print?

We will not print any material which defames or violates the right of privacy or publicity, or any copyright, trademark right or any other right of any third party or which may be abusive or threatening to any third party, advocate any illegal activity, or be obscene, pornographic or violate any law. Comixpress reserves the right to remove any comics from our online store that it deems to be in violation of these principles or for any other reason.

That was the legalese. Here it is in English: We have no intention of printing anything that constitutes hate speech of any kind, so please don’t even ask. And as far as X rated material, we’re not prudes but we have limitations to what we will print, distribute and sell based upon the vague definitions of obscenity laws. In a nutshell, we’ll print “R” rated material, but no graphic sexual content. If you have a question about whether or not we’ll print your material, you’re welcome to send us an example page or two that you’re concerned about and we’ll review them and let you know.

13. How does your Creator Referral Program work?

When a Creator who has an account with ComiXpress refers a friend to use our printing services, that Creator gets a $5 credit on their account for each new Creator who mentions their name when placing their first order. This amount can then be applied to future orders through the Creator Control Panel as a Credit. It can’t be applied to Store orders or redeemed for a cash payment.

The new Creator using us for the first time who has mentioned the existing Creator as the person who refers them will receive a 10% discount off their first Quantity order (more than 1 copy of a book).

14. How does your Returning Creator Discount Program work?

For every $100 a Creator spends on their quantity print orders, they receive a permanent 1% discount off the regular print cost on future orders up to a maximum of 5%. This is calculated based upon previous sales and applies to subsequent orders, so if a new Creator places a print order of over $200, their next order will automatically receive 2% off. This is cumulative, so if their second order is for $300, then their account will have reached the 5% discount for their third and all future orders.

Technical FAQs

What size comics do you print?

ComiXpress prints several standard sizes:

Standard comic size (6.625×10.25”)

Minicomic (5×8”)

Zine (8×10.5”)

Digest size (6×9”)

We can also print custom sizes from a minimum size of 5×5” up to a maximum of 8×10.5” at no additional charge. If you require a custom size simply indicate this when placing your order.

We offer specific details for setting up each of these sizes, as well as downloadable templates in a variety of file formats, on the Printing page. We’re also happy to create a custom page size template for your custom size book. Just ask!

What kind of paper and binding options are available?

We offer saddle-stitch (staple) binding and perfect bound books (trade paperbacks). We use a 50# text paper for all interior pages, and an 80# glossy paper for saddle-stitched covers (this produces a traditional “floppy” cover comic) and 100# glossy index stock for perfect bound covers.

What file formats do you accept? Do you accept PDFs?

Of course! We wouldn’t be very good printers if we couldn’t handle PDFs. J

We also welcome high resolution 300 dpi JPG, TIF and PSD files. TIFs and PSDs should be flattened copies of your original layered files (to reduce the size) and must have all extra Channels removed. Comics provided in this single-file fashion need to be clearly named. For example:

cover.tif

Insidefront.tif

Insideback.tif

Backcover.tif

page01.tif

page02.tif

Etc etc etc

Do I have any other file options?

We also accept Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and QuarkXpress files for a minimal PrePress charge (estimated charges will be emailed to you once we have reviewed the files).  If you are supplying Illustrator,  Quark or InDesign files, please be sure you include all fonts and placed images used within the document. Placed artwork should be at 300 dpi. Please see our technical specifications for additional info on preparing files.

Can I mail you my pages to scan?

At this time, ComiXpress only accepts digital files.

How should I send my comic to you?

We offer a dedicated FTP service for you to upload your books to us at no charge, accessible through your Creator Control Panel once you have logged in. Please do not send us files as an email attachment; any unsolicited email with attachments will be deleted. You are also welcome to post your files on your own website or FTP server, then simply include the link when you place your order and we will download your files. Otherwise, burn your PDF file onto a CD and send it to:

Orders & Shipping FAQs

How long will it take to print my comics?

Files are reviewed within 1 week of receipt (usually much shorter, but we get some busy seasons). If you have ordered a single copy we will consider that a printed proof and that will ship within two weeks of the receipt of your files and payment, assuming your files were submitted to our specifications. These stapled ‘proof’ copies tend to ship faster than that two week estimate, and Trade Paperback 1 copy orders tend to ship right around that two week mark.

Quantity Orders for both Stapled Comics and Trade Paperbacks ship within 28 days of the receipt of your files and payment, again assuming your files were submitted to our specs. Any issues with your files or delay in payment will delay that ship date.

Posters and Flyers always ship within two weeks of the receipt of your files and payment, (once more, assuming your files were submitted to our specifications).

Do you accept Rush Orders?

Yes; if you find yourself running out of time and need your books printed faster than our standard turnaround, we offer three tiers of expedited printing for additional charges. Quotes for Rush Printing are available through our Print Calculators once you are logged into your Creator Control Panel. Please be aware that these are in-house rushes and affect production time and ship date only. Expedited shipping may also be an option if you need your books really, really fast.

How Do I place a Reorder on a book I have previously printed with you?

It couldn’t be easier to reorder a book already in our system! Simply select the book in your creator control panel under ‘My Books’ and click Reorder.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, PayPal and plain old fashioned check or money order sent in the mail. Please note that checks will have to clear before we begin printing, and will slow the production time of your book, and also that delays in payment will hold up  the production of your book.

How will you ship my order, and how much will it cost?

Comics ship via UPS or USPS (United States Postal Service) depending upon weight (we will pick the more cost efficient method to ship to your location) at standard/ground rates. Shipping and handling fees will be finalized before you are emailed an itemized invoice for your total.

Do you ship internationally?

Of course! ComiXpress is proud to serve comic Creators and Readers in all corners of the world! Ship times from the US can be lengthy so please plan accordingly!

What happens if I receive my order and there is a problem with the books?

ComiXpress stands behind the comics we print, and will always replace comics that were misprinted due to our error or damaged in transit at no cost to you. Please see our Damaged Comics & Returns Policy for more information.

We are very proud of the vibrancy of our colors and depths of our grayscale, but please be aware that we can offer no guarantee that the printed page will match your monitor.  Color differences of this nature do not constitute damaged or misprinted books. Again, we encourage you to start with 1 copy if there are concerns so you can see exactly how your files print on our equipment and papers.
